An impressive level of junior surfing was on display over the weekend with the running of the annual Coolum Surf Schools ‘Surf Out’.
Students from Coolum State High School and Coolum State Primary School competed together across five divisions in contestable 3-4 foot waves at Coolum’s main beach.
The event showcased a diverse range of surfing talent from across both schools and provided an opportunity for the primary school students to sample the high level of success in the Surfing Excellence Program that exists for junior level students at Coolum High School.
“Conditions changed throughout the day with clean glassy conditions for the early heats, then a south-easterly wind change moving through later in the day ensuring that the top surfers earned their places in the finals,” said Coolum High School’s Surfing Excellence Co-ordinator and contest director, David Walker.
“I was impressed with the standard of surfing on display considering the tough conditions. The talent across both schools is inspiring and it is encouraging to witness the next generation of surfers from the Primary school already showing a real maturity and passion in their surfing. The future looks great.”
Thanks to the ongoing efforts of the school programs and the local Boardriders group, the Coolum region has produced several standout surfing success stories, including world surfing great Julian Wilson and the increasingly high profile Kelly Norris.
This year, it was the current Surfing Queensland U16 Girls State Champion Isabella Nichols taking glory in the Girls High School division over friend and fellow up-and-comer, Jaleesa Vincent with Cayle Hemphill and Phoebe King taking third and fourth spots respectively.
In the Boys High School division, it was Matt Williams posting the win over Jaleesa’s brother, Jake Vincent, with Taj Conaghan in third and Bede Watson taking fourth.
Mr Walker thanked major sponsors Coolum Surf, Hive Swimwear and On Safari Gallery for their generous sponsorship of the annual event, as well as Coolum State School’s Dan Stanig, Coolum Boardriders, Head Judge Jeff Previti, Brayden Wallace and popular surf coach Peter ‘Rune’ McNamara.
