Sunshine Coast gets a spring in its step

Queenslanders are being encouraged to hit the ground running this weekend, at the Sunshine Coast Marathon and Community Run Festival.
Minister for Recreation and Sport, Steve Dickson said the Newman Government was providing $25,000 sponsorship for the 25 August festival, at Alexandra Headlands.
“The festival, which is now in its second year, is one of the Sunshine Coast’s biggest sporting events,” Mr Dickson said.
“Last year’s event attracted 5,000 participants and festival organisers believe this year’s event will be twice as big with close to 10,000 participants.
“The festival caters for people of all ages and abilities, with a full marathon, half marathon, 10km and 5km race, along with a 2km kids and community run.
“This is a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the outdoors, while raising money for Ronald McDonald House and the Westpac Foundation.”
Mr Dickson said the Queensland Government’s support of the festival was about building an active and vibrant community and encouraging active recreation.
“We want all Queenslanders to get involved in physical activity and have access to sporting opportunities, wherever they live in our great State,” he said.
“We are doing this by helping both sport and recreation clubs and families at the grassroots community level through our initiative called Get in the Game,” he said.
“Through three new funding programs worth $47.8 million, the government will be providing clubs with better equipment and facilities and giving children who might not otherwise be able to afford it the opportunity to play sport.”
