The Transport Management Authority has approved the first stage of the Suncoast Boulevard Streetscape Project to commence.
Division 8 Councillor Debbie Blumel said that works will begin within the fortnight.
“Local people have been patiently waiting for these works to commence and I’m delighted to say that activity start soon,” Cr Blumel said.
“Work is planned fro completion by early December, just in time for the festive season.”
The first stage of work will include construction of the Rex Terrace roundabout and a nearby northbound bus stop.
There will be road and drainage works, a road lighting upgrade, new footpaths and pedestrian links across David Low Way, street tree planting and the installation of street furniture.
Traffic conditions will change in the works vicinity during the construction process, however, two lanes of traffic will remain on David Low Way at all times.
Traffic management measures will be in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists.
“Design work has already begun for Stage 2 of the streetscape project,” Cr Blumel said.
Stage 2 will focus on the creation of a new village square at the end of Lexie Street and an upgrade to the linking retail frontage to the north and south.
Council is also investigating the feasibility of both underground power for most of the western side commercial precinct and the inclusion of artwork in the streetscape.
Members of the North Shore Traders have raised the possibility of public toilets and signage in the streetscape. This request is being assessed by council’s project team.
