Over 60's National Cricket Cricket Championships for the Coast

Councillor Jason O’Pray with Queensland Seniors Cricket President Kerry Emery

Economic Development (Tourism, Sport and Major Events) Portfolio Councillor Jason OPray together with Queensland Seniors Cricket President, Kerry Emery today (Wednesday 1 May) announced the Sunshine Coast has secured the eighth Over 60’s National Cricket Championships 2013.
Cr OPray said the week-long championships to take place in September would yield significant economic benefits across the entire Sunshine Coast region.
“The championship matches will be played throughout the Sunshine Coast from Noosa to Caloundra, Landsborough to Yandina at all of the Coast’s major cricket fields,” Cr OPray said.
“We are expecting more than 600 people – including 400 players making up 32 teams and 200 partners and friends – from all Australian states, the ACT and New Zealand to converge here on the Coast to attend the week-long event.
“The championships will be held from Saturday 7 to Thursday 12 September in what is often a bit of a tourism lull just before the September school holidays, making the event even more of an important boost for our local accommodation houses, cafes, restaurants, clubs and retailers.”
Mr Emery said Queensland Seniors Cricket was delighted the Sunshine Coast had been chosen to host the eighth National Over 60’s Cricket Championships.
“The Coast is an ideal location for these championships to feature over four days of cricket with a rest day midway through, along with a meet and greet and a Championship Dinner with guest speaker, former Australian Test wicket-keeper Ian Healy,” he said.
“Leading the Queensland Team into the tournament will be former Gympie cricketer and now Australian Over 60’s vice-captain, Ross Chapman.
“For many of the visitors this will be their first trip to the Sunshine Coast and they are looking forward to experiencing all that it has to offer. I know many have already planned day trips to a number of key tourist attractions to pack into their rest day.”
