Sunshine Coast Council is calling all families to join in the Dads Read celebrations and head to some of the free and fun activities planned at local libraries throughout September.
Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Dads Read is aimed at raising awareness of the importance and benefits of fathers and families reading with their children.
“Reading with young children not only helps them to develop a love of reading but also builds self-esteem which is a fundamental life skill,” Cr McKay said.
“Families are invited to head for Maroochydore Library from 10am to 2pm on 1 September for the launch of the month long, fun-filled Dads Readcelebrations.
“Children are encouraged to come dressed up as their favourite story book character and join in the fun with Red Riding Hood, Captain Hook and Alice in Wonderland.
“Come along ready for some great games and activities including Lego building, storytelling with local legend dads, paper plane construction, drumming, even the Maroochydore Fire crew may pay us a visit and much more.
“All this fun will be sure to build a healthy appetite and Friends of the Library will have a sausage sizzle available for purchase from 11.30 am to 1.30pm.”
Division 8 Councillor Jason OPray said it is an honour to launch the Dads Read promotion as reading aloud to his daughters is an every day occurrence in his household.
“Reading is fun and is a special bonding time between a parent and a child,” Cr OPray said.
“It is well known that reading with your child strengthens their literacy skills and builds their self esteem.
“My family are regular visitors to our local library and we will be definitely joining in one of the Dads Read storytelling sessions throughout September.
“Kids are also invited to bring their Dad to a Block Party at their local library and build a plane, train or automobile.”
