Landmark Nambour Clock Ticks Again

7th Feb, 2018 by Charles Hodgson View News

After a 30-year ‘time-out’, one of Nambour’s prominent former landmarks is once again alive and ticking!
The Nambour Town clock, which was mounted to the Currie Street wall of the old Maroochy Shire Council Chambers from 1953 to 1987, has returned to working order on a new tower which sits on the Bury Street frontage of the Nambour and District Historical Museum.
Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said it was a timely project for Nambour given the efforts of council and other community groups to restore a number of historical elements around the town.
“It’s absolutely terrific to see the old town hall clock brought back to life and I’m incredibly proud of the Nambour and District Historical Museum for driving this project and council for providing a major grant in the Cultural Heritage category for $6,500 towards this great project.” Cr Rogerson said.
“Over the past few years there has been a collective effort by council and local community groups to salvage and incorporate the giant cogs from the old Moreton Sugar Mill in the new Nambour Skate Park and Heroes Walk facility adjacent to the RSL, as well as in the centre of the roundabout on Mill St nearby the new Coles Supermarket,” Cr Rogerson said.
“We also recently finished a wonderful restoration of the historical Old Ambulance Station on Howard Street in coordination with the Sunshine Coast Arts Industry Precinct and around $650k has been raised by The Nambour Tramway Company, through the bi-monthly Tramfest Events and a Federal Government grant for the Nambour Heritage Tramway Project. Council has also agreed to contribute additional resources and progress several key elements of this project.
“All in all, these are among the many quirky, contemporary projects we’ve undertaken or are looking to undertake around Nambour as part of the Nambour Activation Plan. Since the endorsement of the plan in 2015, council has invested in, or committed to, new infrastructure at the Petrie Creek Parklands, Nambour Showgrounds and the Nambour Heritage Tramway Project.”
Nambour and District Historical Museum President Clive Plater said the tower and clock were now clearly visible from Bury Street and the Nambour Mill Village Shopping Centre.
“Signage with historical details of the clock will also be attached to the museum’s fence in front of the clock tower so pedestrians passing by can read all about its history,” Mr Plater said.
“It has been all hands on deck at the museum to restore the old Nambour Town clock but time certainly flies when you’re having fun!”
