You won’t recognise Kawana Skate Park after Sunday’s Art in the Park project fashions it into tiptop shape.
And the community is invited to get involved in the mural makeover – being run by Sunshine Coast Council and Sunshine Coast Arts Industry Precinct Inc (SCAIP) – on Sunday 30 October 2011 from 8am until noon.
Division 3 Councillor Keryn Jones said the aim of the project was to beautify Kawana Skate Park while simultaneously creating a sense of ownership amongst the local community and park users.
“The project will give the skate park facility a real facelift to be more youth friendly through the application of murals chosen by local skate park users and painted by artists from SCAIP,” she said.
Two retainer walls at the park will be painted. One wall will feature a mural of the characters from the Super Hero Squad and the other will be painted to include the wording ‘Kawana Skate Park’.
The community will also have an opportunity to roll up their sleeves and take part in special skate deck art workshops facilitated by SCAIP artists.
Cr Jones said allowing these local artists to showcase their talent in a public arena demonstrates an appreciation for the street art in its correct form.
“The project will also provide a really fun activity for families and the broader community to engage in,” she said.
