High-flying ‘acro’ gymnasts compete in Nationals

Over 150 acrobatic gymnasts from across Australia will battle it out in the Acrobatic Gymnastics National Club Championships and Queensland Cup at the Caloundra Indoor Stadium on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast today and tomorrow.
Kym Dowdell, Gymnastics Queensland’s Chief Executive Officer said the two-day event promises to be a great showcase of the country’s most elite acrobatic gymnasts representing 13 clubs in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, ACT and Western Australia.
“The competition promises to be tough this year and we look forward to an exciting event that gives these talented gymnasts an opportunity to compete against the best Australia has to offer,” said Ms Dowdell.
“These events provide an excellent opportunity for those interested in acro gymnastics to come along and see some of our finest competitors perform their complex routines.”
The event is sponsored by Gymnastics Queensland, the Sunshine Coast Council and Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd and will showcase the best-of-the-best from each club and state aged between 8 – 26 years.
Acrobatic gymnastics, also often referred to as ‘acro’ is one of the most popular gymnastics disciplines for spectators. It’s partner sport, ‘sports acro’ sees couples, trios and quads complete routines that demonstrate a combination of strength, flexibility and technical precision as well as the grace and musical flow of dance.
The event will be held at Caloundra Indoor Stadium and tickets will be available at the door. For further details on this event, please visit www.gymqld.org.au or call 3036 5607.
