Sunshine Coast Airport today announced that a comprehensive stakeholder and community engagement program around its expansion project, including a new runway, had started.
The announcement follows the receipt of Terms of Reference for an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which was finalised by the Queensland Coordinator-General and released to Sunshine Coast Council on 18 May 2012.
Sunshine Coast Mayor, Mark Jamieson, said getting the community involved was another important step for the airport expansion, which would create thousands of jobs and strengthen the economy for decades to come.
“Of course, these benefits are subject to approval of the EIS, and funding – this is why council will continue to work hard to get financial backing for the project,” Mayor Jamieson said.
Sunshine Coast Airport general manager, Peter Pallot said the EIS was expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2013 after which it would be exhibited for formal public comment and then lodged with the Queensland and Australian Governments for assessment.
“Ahead of the formal comment period, though, we would like to reach as many people as possible to tell them about the project and to answer any questions they may have.”
Mr Pallot said the airport had established a range of mechanisms through which the community could become involved in the project.
“We have launched a freecall project information phone line and a project-specific email address and we encourage people to make contact with us if they have any queries about the proposed project,” Mr Pallot said.
“In addition, we will be placing information about the project on the airport’s website, which can also be accessed via the council website.”
He said the airport had established a project database and people interested in knowing more about the proposed expansion could register via the airport’s website.
“Throughout the preparation of the EIS keeping the community up to date on the project will be our top priority,” Mr Pallot said.
