Major Projects Portfolio councillor Debbie Blumel announced today that she will nominate as a candidate for Mayor of the Sunshine Coast Council at the local government election due in March 2012.
Cr Blumel said she had been encouraged to run by many local Sunshine Coast people.
“I have enjoyed getting things done as councillor and am passionate about meeting the needs of local people, particularly in terms of job creation and protecting our lifestyle and the environment,” said Cr Blumel.
“I pay tribute to outgoing Mayor Bob Abbot. He has worked hard to set the foundation for the things that I would like to achieve in the next term of Council.”
Cr Blumel has built a strong reputation as an untiring advocate for the people of the Sunshine Coast and as a person who gets things done.
“I said that I wanted to finalise a number of major projects before deciding how I could best contribute to the Sunshine Coast region. That has now happened.”
Cr Blumel has been instrumental in advancing the Sunshine Coast Airport Master Plan and delivering the Maroochy Botanical Gardens Arts and Ecology Centre, the Maroochy North Shore Community Centre and the Noosa Junction Transit Centre.
She has also chaired the $1M federally-funded Feasibility Study for the Sunshine Coast Entertainment, Convention and Exhibition Centre Reference Group which will be presented to Council shortly.
“The Sunshine Coast is a great place to live and work”, said Cr Blumel, “but we have a number of challenges before us.
“My priorities in the next term of council will be water affordability, job creation, strengthening the local economy, protecting the environment, improving transport links and adopting new environmentally-friendly and clean technology.
“The Sunshine Coast is made up of many communities – rural and urban, coastal and hinterland, working families, retirees and young people.
“I believe in strong community engagement. It is the backbone of the work of Council.
“Leadership is about listening,” Cr Blumel said, “and I want to begin this campaign by continuing to listen to business and industry as well as local people about their priorities for the future.”
Cr Blumel was first elected to council in 2008. A former health professional and long-term resident of the Sunshine Coast, Cr Blumel and her husband Ross have three daughters.
