After its running battle with Mother Nature in recent years, the greatly anticipated Marcoola Rocks is certain to draw big crowds again when 26 January rolls around.
The Australia Day celebration will take place in and around Marcoola Surf Lifesaving Club and after the event was hampered by storms earlier this year. Locals are getting excited about what is planned for 2014. So much so that thousands are expected to enjoy our national day on one of the most picturesque beaches on the coast. From small beginnings, Marcoola Rocks has grown to become one of the highlights on the Sunshine Coast events calendar.
Just to make sure the Australia Day celebrations keep getting better, Marcoola Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank has come to the party with a $6,000 sponsorship, over and above the bank’s current sponsorship arrangements with the club.
Surf club president David McLean said the club is deeply grateful for the sponsorship from its local Community Bank and says it’s an event for the whole town.
“We’re just thrilled that the Marcoola Community Bank branch has believed in the event we’ve created here. Between three and four thousand people have turned up in previous years so we know we’re going to have quite a crowd here on Australia Day. We know we’re going to provide a great place and a great atmosphere for everyone to come and celebrate all that’s great about being an Aussie,” he said.
“Our 2014 celebration will be a great community event. All rides, all bands and all entertainment will be free. It will be Marcoola’s biggest local celebration for the year and we know our community will join in. There will be three bands playing from 10.00am-7.00pm, food to purchase from our international food stalls and beach games and displays. We just want everyone to come down enjoy the day and swim at our fully patrolled beach,” Mr. McLean added.
Local identity and Marcoola Community Bank branch manager Judy Blackall said she loves how the North Shore community has embraced the event in only a few short years.
“This is just the sort of project our Marcoola Community Bank loves being involved with. It was a local idea for the good of our community and we’re delighted to support the event for 2014. Let’s hope we get some good Australia Day weather on January 26 and all the hard work will pay off for all to enjoy,” Judy said.
