The inconsistent speed limit of Caloundra Road is about to change following the announcement that a local community campaign to change the speed limit has been successful.
Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie said that it is great to see common sense prevail.
“I am pleased to announce that we have been successful in our campaign to have the speed limit increased on Caloundra Road, between Racecourse Road and the Kawana Way Link Road, from 80 km/h to 100 km/h,” Mr Bleijie said.
Mr Bleijie said that the speed limit of Caloundra Road was an issue for many local residents and tourists who regularly use the main access road in and out of Caloundra.
“The previous two lane Caloundra Road was a goat track, with no kerb and channelling in some places and yet it was able to sustain a speed limit of 100 km/h,” Mr Bleijie said.
“This positive announcement follows the community based campaign, which included the tabling of a Parliamentary petition signed by 1542 residents.
“The petition called for a more consistent speed limit on a 1.4 kilometre section of the new four lane arterial road.
“This has been a long campaign by the community and I am glad to see a common sense solution to what has been a source of great frustration for motorists.
“When we launched the petition, there were a few knockers telling us that we would never get the speed limit changed but this result just shows what you can achieve when a community gets behind a particular issue.
“Thank you to everyone who was part of the campaign.
“The new signage should be in place in the coming weeks.
“I am advised that the Department will continue to monitor this section of the road once the new speed limit is in place,” Mr Bleijie said.
