35 Countries, 3000 participants, spectators and supporters will boost Sunshine Coast economy over 10 plus days of competition and Tourism.
At the recent annual IVF (International Va’a Federation) AGM held in Rio, AOCRA (Australian Outrigging Canoe Racing Association) President Mark Forbes tabled a bid to host the 2016 World Sprint Titles (WST’s) on the Sunshine Coast.
Australia was initially competing against Italy and Hawaii with the final battle coming down to Hawaii and Australia as Italy withdrew their bid.
Thanks to the support shown by the Sunshine Coast Council, in particular Mayor Mark Jamieson, AOCRA was able to present a very professional bid that overwhelmingly won the voter’s choice. Staff worked on the bid with local design company dtb! to present the Sunshine Coast as the destination of choice.
“The presentation had real WOW factor, Hawaii were gracious in defeat, they were the first country to congratulate us and after seeing our presentation were quite excited to be making plans to visit the Sunshine Coast Mr Forbes said”
The IVF has 35 member countries and gauging the interest shown at the recent Rio AGM the 2016 WST’s promises to set a new paddler participation record.
Mayor Jamieson said winning the titles was excellent news and thanked everyone who contributed to the successful bid.
“The Sunshine Coast is already punching well above its weight in attracting and winning major sporting events such as the World Sprint Titles,” he said.
“It’s wonderful to hear we are now hosting the 2016 titles, and my thanks go to Mark Forbes and the team for a great effort.”
The 2016 WST’s will be held in May and will dovetail into the International Aussie Aito event and the National Marathon Titles held later in May at Mooloolaba. This therefore guarantees maximum benefit to Sunshine Coast businesses as the competitors will have extra incentive to stay on and enjoy the treasurers that only the Sunny Coast and Queensland has to offer and compete in our iconic ocean racing events as well.
Mr Forbes said “Prior to the Rio AGM we invited the President of the IVF ( Charles Villierme) to visit our area, survey the facilities and sample our hospitality, with the support of the Sunshine Coast Council and local business Mantra Group Hotel.
This initiative went a long way to securing the bid for upon Charles’s return home to Tahiti the IVF members received a glowing report of the area and its ability to host a world class event.
Cr Jason O’Pray who holds the Sport, Tourism and Major Events portfolio for council is full of enthusiasm, “this event is another fantastic event for the Coast” “2016 WST’s will not only form a very important building block for the sport of Outrigging but will be of a major economic benefit to the Sunny Coast in general”. Running off the back of the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships what a special couple of months it is going to be, “I can’t wait to be a part of these events and welcome all these competitors to our region.”
As an added promotional activity the IVF’s 2015 AGM will be held at Mooloolaba, will have representatives from the majority of the 35 countries and will be an ideal time for the Coast to showcase the area further.
Although we are talking about 2015/2016 meetings and events planning is well under way already for this is a chance for our sport to be recognised on the International stage at a level never before experienced and for the Sunny Coast to play a major part in the overall success.
The winning bid document from dtb! Advertising presented in Rio was voted as the best ever production and is certainly worth a look. http://publ.com/FjsMWho
