Wait for the green pedestrian light before you cross the road.
That’s the message from Sunshine Coast Council for pedestrians travelling across the intersection of Sippy Downs Drive and Stringybark Road.
Division 6 Councillor Christian Dickson said an alarming number of pedestrians had been ignoring traffic signals when crossing at the intersection.
“This morning we witnessed numerous school children walking and on bicycles and also some adults crossing against the red pedestrian signals,” he said.
“This is extremely dangerous at the best of times let alone in an area where significant road works are occurring and full visibility is somewhat compromised.
“Even a split second of misjudgement can cause a tragedy on the roads so please if you’re a student, wait for the green pedestrian signal and for parents, please remind your children to activate the green light and only cross the road when the pedestrian signals are green.”
Cr Dickson said traffic delays around the intersection would be ongoing during the morning and afternoon peak periods.
“This is due to the fact that although the traffic signals are now operational we cannot yet open all of the traffic lanes as other elements of the intersection are still under construction,” he said.
“At the end of September when the asphalt is installed and the vehicle detector loops are operational, all of the traffic lanes will open and peak periods should be far less congested.”
