If your QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre) preferences haven’t quite delivered what you were hoping for, don’t panic. There are heaps of ways to get where you want to go or explore what the world after school has to offer.
That’s the advice from TAFE Queensland career counsellor Suzanne Ketcheson who advises that TAFE can be the perfect pathway to university study or into employment.
“Completing a TAFE diploma can improve your QTAC ranking and give you up to a year off particular degrees,” says Suzanne.
“In areas like nursing and childcare for example, having a diploma qualification also allows you to work in the industry while you finish your degree.”
With so many options, Suzanne’s advice is to make sure you make an informed decision by talking to career counsellor like herself.
“TAFE is unique in that we have careers counsellors across the state who can provide free career counselling and information about course options.
“School leavers considering study at TAFE can make an appointment to look at the courses that may suit them or explore what career is for them.”
TAFE Queensland CEO Jodi Schmidt agrees. “This shouldn’t be a stressful time for school leavers. TAFE gives you many opportunities to get practical skills that will set you on the path to do extraordinary things.”
“Each year we support almost 200,000 students to reach their study goals – whether that is to find a job or turn their passion into a career.”
“Many of our students choose to complete a TAFE qualification as a stepping stone to university.
“TAFE also offers many combined TAFE and university programs which means students complete some of the program at TAFE and then automatically continue their studies at university.
“This year TAFE has a range of ways to help with the costs of study including VET Fee-Help which is a student loan that allows you to study now and pay later.”
TAFE Queensland institutes today made 3,360 offers to applicants as part of QTAC’s major offer round for study commencing in Semester One, 2014. Applicants have until 10am on 23 January to accept their offer.
The most popular TAFE programs were for diploma study in nursing, justice studies, business, information technology networking and early childhood education and care.
QTAC processes applications for diploma, advanced diploma and associate degree courses at TAFE Queensland institutes with entry into other TAFE programs made directly with Sunshine Coast TAFE.
