More acts announced for Caloundra Music Festival

More acts announced for Caloundra Music Festival

Caloundra Music Festival 2013List No 2 for the 2013 Caloundra Music Festival is ready to roll – and confirms CMF as a true family event for a wide range of ages and musical tastes.

Alternative rock styles have a huge following – and Western Australia clearly knows what they’re all about – because two of the genre’s best bands,Eskimo Joe and Jebediah, hail from Fremantle in that big, wide state – and are headed for Caloundra for the October 4-7 event.

German rockabilly sensations The Baseballs will give two exclusive Australian performances at CMF. They have become European superstars  doing their 50s and 60s-style rock cover versions of modern hits such as Umbrella by Rihanna, Crazy in Love by Beyonce Knowles, Hot n Cold by Katy Perry and Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen.

California’s 80s/90s superstar Toni Childs will also be appearing in this year’s line-up – as will Sydney singer-songwriter Alex Lloyd.

Some acts are just so well-received that you have to ask them back – so Mama Kin will be encoring her 2012 appearance in 2013.

And short of absolute madness, there’s only one Aussie band which can express the sound of ska in its true exuberance and perfection – yep, Nicky Bomba’s incredibly popular Melbourne Ska Orchestra will turbocharge CMF audiences all over again. Nicky will also bring his Bustamento act back to CMF by popular acclaim.

Going overseas again – and going for reggae – Enrique ‘Quique’ Neira Leiva is a Chilean reggae composer and singer. Check out “Pensando En Ti Letra” on u-tube – then buy the ticket.

Rocky rock duo Busby Marou is heading into town for CMF, while yet another WA visitor, blues/roots band Blue Shaddy will feature.

Who loves Aretha? We do! And what’s the next best thing? New York soul sensation Lisa Hunt,  a CMF favourite.

Nine-piece Melbourne soul band Saskwatch is also creating a frenzy across the nation, headed up by the incomparable singer Nkechi Anele – don’t miss!

Closer to home, Brisbane indie band Sheppard will perform its unique sound, while Sydney-based soul/funk/reggae band the Leisure Banditscompletes this round of performer announcements.

“We think we have a really well rounded and interesting line-up,” festival director Richie Eyles said.

“Some big name Aussie acts, along with some quality internationals offering plenty of diversity and good times for all.”

Caloundra Music Festival is being held from Friday October 4 to Monday October 7, over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Fruehlings Quest to showcase local talent

The largest ever search for young local talent on the Sunshine Coast is on, set to take the stage on Saturday 10 August 2013 to showcase the high standard of budding musicians, performers, dancers and singers residing on the Coast.

The talent quest, called FruehlingsQuest, is part of the annual Fruehlingsfest festival and offers major cash prizes for youth aged 5-12 years and 13-18 years across all areas of performing arts, as individuals or groups.

FruehlingsQuest organiser, Ms Kim Sly, said the talent quest is open to anyone from the Sunshine Coast or surrounds, and has already attracted registrations from an elite field of local performers.

“We have award-winning ballerinas, superb singers and musicians destined to ‘go big’,” Ms Sly said.

“The Sunshine Coast is home to so many talented youth, we are excited to be able to offer cash prizes and a stage on which to perform in front of an appreciative and enthusiastic audience,” she said.

The FruehlingsQuest search for talent is an initiative of Immanuel Lutheran College in response to large numbers of students excelling in performing arts from within the College and wider community.
School Principal, Mr David Bliss, said the event sends an important message to youth about setting goals, working hard and not being afraid to express yourself.

“As educators, parents and community members we need to help youth achieve confidence and success across a broad spectrum of areas, including artistic expression and public performance,” Mr Bliss said.

“Education is not just about desks and textbooks; it is about identifying individual strengths and encouraging our youth to showcase their talents in a supportive forum,” he said.

“As a teacher and a Principal I am fortunate to witness the incredible talents of students every day. FruehlingsQuest gives the Sunshine Coast community an opportunity to do the same.

“I encourage anyone who loves to sing, dance, play music or perform to enter. We want to give talented young locals a confidence boost and financial reward to potentially make a real difference in their life and career aspirations,” Mr Bliss said.

Prizes are up for grabs in both categories, with the first-place winners collecting $400 each and the runners-up receiving $250 each.

FruehlingsQuest registrations close on 30 June 2013. Enter online at www.fruehlingsfest.com.au. Heats will be held in July, with finals staged on Saturday 10 August 2013 at the Fruehlingsfest spring fair, Immanuel Lutheran College, Buderim.

Caloundra Music Festival first artist announcement

Caloundra Music Festival first artist announcement

Caloundra Music Festival 2013

The Caloundra Music Festival team has released its first artist announcement for this year’s Festival, being held on October 4 to 7.

And it’s a very cool list featuring some of the very best Australian music and a soulful sampling of music from around the globe.

Five-piece Australian folk-rock outfit Boy and Bear top the list, to play on Friday, while Dave Gleeson’s The Screaming Jets will rock the amphitheatre on Sunday night.

Melbourne band The Basics will also feature this year; while the band may be new to you their Facebook site describes them as “Gotye and two pretty cool guys” … go figure! The Basics hit the stage on Sunday, while fellow Melbourne urban roots legends Blue King Brown will perform on Friday night.

From their humble beginnings in West African refugee camps Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars have performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages and matured into one of Africa’s top touring and recording bands. The band is a potent example of the redeeming power of music and the ability of the human spirit to persevere through unimaginable hardship and emerge with optimism intact. The All Stars will give three exclusive Australian performances at CMF across the weekend.

No Caloundra Music Festival would ever be complete without some input from New Orleans – and this year is no different. In fact, CMF will be honoured this year by the presence of Ivan Neville and his superb band Dumpstaphunk. Ivan is the son of Aaron Neville and nephew to the Neville Brothers, and has featured in their music. Dumpstafunk will play on Friday and Saturday.

Sticking with the US of A for a moment: if blues lights your fuse, you won’t want to miss visitors The Holmes Brothers’ rootsy R&B, gospel, blues and country. The New York Times described their sound as “Timeless, deeply soulful and uplifting gospel-drenched …”

Winging their way from under the Long White Cloud for a special performance, reggae act Katchafire will be appearing on Friday.

CMF is a family festival, so it goes without saying that iconic acts will always be a major part of the show, too – so cast your mind back to when you were going “hmm-maow-m’maow-maow” in that most excellent year of music-to-land-on-the-moon-by: 1969. Yep, Russell Morris is back – on the charts in 2013, and on Saturday at CMF.

And on Monday – CMF’s new fourth day! – some of the best-known Aussie headline performers will be appearing together under the name of Time of Our Lives. Joe Camilleri, James Reyne, Ross Wilson and Daryl Braithwaite have formed this band and are wowing crowds across the breadth of this wide brown land – as they will no doubt do right here on October 7.

Add to that impressive line-up the likes of Xavier Rudd, Donavon Frankenreiter, and Nahko and the Medicine People and you’ve got every reason to visit www.caloundramusicfestival.com and get your early-bird ticket.

But wait – there’s more, of course, as more acts and seriously brilliant CMF features are due to be announced on Thursday June 20.

“We will be announcing further acts in due course, but as you can see, it’s already a fantastic line-up for 2013,” festival director Richie Eyles said.

“But as a huge supporter of local music CMF always as a large representation of home-grown talent, so in 2013 the first three to be announced are Kindread, Soula and The Floating Bridges.”

Economic Development (major events) portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray said the Caloundra Music Festival would be preceded by a number of major events in the winter on the Coast – with many located in Caloundra.

“In August alone the Caloundra area will play host to the National Angling Championships and Convention, Tough Mudder, taking place on Caloundra South land, and the 2013 Special Olympics Queensland Spring Festival and State Games,” he said.

Divisional councillor Tim Dwyer said the addition of a fourth day into the festival was a great bonus for additional tourism into Caloundra and the Coast generally.

“Many people come a long way to the Caloundra Music Festival, and a fourth day gives them even better value for money in making the journey,” he said.

“We are also gearing up for the second Caloundra Fringe Festival, which will take the concept much further this year.”

Ocean Street Festival to attract thousands Easter Sunday

Ocean World Festival LogoMaroochydore’s Ocean Street will lighten spirits this Easter Sunday with a free family fun filled event that will be jam packed with three stages filled with live World music, amazing artwork and stunning food from local cafés and restaurants.

The second annual Ocean Street World Festival is a not for profit event undertaken by the Maroochydore Revitalisation Association with the assistance of SolBar.

With over 8,000 people enjoying the festival last year, event organizers are expecting well over 10,000 people to soak up an array of activities including an art exhibition, fine food and live music from a diverse range of musicians including the internationally renowned music troupe Watussi.

Watussi are a well-traveled troupe of Latino-tinged rockers that have shared the stage with Santana, recorded with legendary New Orleans blues pianist Jon Cleary and recently played a double bill show with Cuban master percussionist Pedro Martinez.  Watussi rose to fame after their debut album was nominated for an ARIA in 2008. With the jiving rhythms of horns and shaking base lines, Watussi will be one of the many highlights of the festival.

Maroochydore Revitalisation Association spokesperson Joe Riba said the event would appeal to the whole family with a range of great musicians, food stalls, artisans and children’s activities.

“The event has attracted many talented artists and it is very rare to have so much diversity and talent in the one location here on the Sunshine Coast.

“The festival will include a range of traditional world music styles from Greece and Cyprian folk from The Icons, The Pacific Island Dance Group, New Zealand’s and the Cheap Fake’s very own Jess Harlen, African drumming, and Afro Cuban styles from Samoko, and the Flumes.

“All of the major local restaurants and cafes as well as the revamped Duporth Tavern will be open and we have some great food stalls including Michael Torchia from Arnica who will again be producing his home made Italian sausages which were a huge hit last year,” he said.

Westpac, the Sunshine Coast Council, Duporth Tavern, Hot 91, SolBar and the Reed Property Group’s Big Top shopping centre are proud sponsors the Ocean Street World Festival 2013.

The Noosa Long Weekend Festival (14-23 June, 2013) is so popular that this year, for the first time in the event’s 12 year history, ticket sales have been segmented into two release dates to help the organisers’ manage demand.  The annual 10 day cultural celebration will have a total of more than 85 events, with tickets for 22 of the events, including the opening night act, Bobby Fox’s ‘4 seasons in 1 night’, going on sale from 9.00am today (Friday 22 March, 2013).

Hot off the stage from his critically acclaimed, national performance as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys Australia, Irish born singer, dancer, actor and television star, Bobby Fox will head to Noosa, Queensland in June 2013 for the Queensland premiere of his brand new show, ‘4 Seasons in 1 Night’.

Bobby will open the 10 day Noosa Long Weekend Festival at the J Theatre on Friday 14 June at 7.30pm and then return for a second show onSaturday 15 June at 7.30pm.  Bobby will be accompanied by a four piece band and two backup singers.

Details of all early release events can be found on the festival’s website www.noosalongweekend.com

Early birds and culture vultures will be swooping in on the first round of tickets making sure they are able to secure a spot at their favourite events; the remaining events will be released for sale on Friday 3 May, 2013.

The annual 10 day cultural celebration is well known as one of Australia’s leading regional arts festivals and is further enhanced by being staged in one of Australia’s most desirable resort locations.

tall-macquarie-noosa-long-weekend-logoTrue to the festival’s reputation as a multi-arts genre event, early release events encompass a wide range of entertainment options including music, theatre, cabaret, drama, dance, forums, literature, food, film, supper clubs, workshops and even a Viennese Ball.
Festival Director, Ian Mackellar said that the two-stage ticket release was designed to assist patrons with advance planning their festival experience as well as easing the historical “ticket sale traffic jam” when the full program is released.
“Based on previous festivals, many of our events sell out within hours.  This year we’ve decided to extend the ticket sale period to provide more of our patrons with the opportunity to secure tickets to their chosen events, Ian said.

“The vast majority of our early release events take place at ‘Festival HQ’, also known as The J Theatre, Noosa. Due to the size of the venue there are only a few hundred tickets available for each performance.   I would remind audiences of the old adage of ‘you snooze, you lose’.  History dictates that all events will be sell outs.
Ian reiterated the festival’s ongoing commitment to “making the arts affordable and accessible to all,” as evidenced by ticket prices starting at just $15 with a series of free events also scheduled in the festival program.

“As well as the amazing events just announced, we have plenty more surprises up our sleeves for the full program release on May 3. I am quite sure that there are not going to be too many people getting too much sleep during those 10 days in June”, Ian laughed.

To purchase early release event tickets visit www.noosalongweekend.com or visit The J Box Office (in person, by phone (07) 5455 4455 or online atwww.thej.com.au.
