RACQ CareFlight Rescue has flown to the aid of a teenager who went head over handlebars on his mountain bike in the Sunshine Coast hinterland yesterday (Sunday).
The 15 year old had been riding down a steep slope as part of an organised race day in Gheerula when he lost control of the bike, came off and hit a tree. He was wearing a helmet at the time.
Witnesses told RACQ CareFlight crew that the teen was travelling up to 60 kilometres per hour at the time of the crash. Despite the incident, he got back on his bike to finish the course.
The RACQ CareFlight helicopter landed at the scene within 12 minutes of departing its Sunshine Coast base. Its flight doctor and intensive care flight paramedic treated the boy for multi-trauma injuries.
He was flown to the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital in a stable condition.
