Member for Fisher Peter Slipper has been elected unopposed as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives after the shock resignation of Speaker Harry Jenkins earlier this morning.
With the resignation of Harry Jenkins the Labor Party nominated Peter Slipper for the position of speaker. Peter Slipper accepted the nomination despite the threat by Opposition Leader Tony Abbot that he would expect any Coalition member accepting nomination to resign from the party.
Nine attempts were made by Leader of Opposition Business Christopher Pyne to nominate a Labor member to accept the Speaker nomination. In turn, each Labor member declined the nomination despite the Opposition’s view that the Speaker come from the government ranks.
Being the only nomination Peter Slipper was installed as Speaker with his first order of business being the election of the Deputy Speaker. Two candidates were nominationed for the position, Labor Member for Chisholm Anna Burke and LNP Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott. The secret ballot elected Anna Burke as Deputy Speaker.
