Sunshine Coast Council has been awarded the Corporate Sustainability Award at the Premier’s Sustainability Awards held in Brisbane tonight.
Mayor Mark Jamieson who accepted the award on behalf of council congratulated everyone who contributed to the success.
“This is a credit to the organisation’s commitment to sustainability – a commitment which has just been re-affirmed by council,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“It’s important the region has a sustainable community and lifestyle, a sustainable environment and a sustainable economy.
“The title of our nomination summed it up well – Sustainability revolution: Sunshine Coast Council leads the way. Meeting the sustainability challenge in a high growth region.
“Council has been working hard to drive sustainability forward both within the organisation and across the region in line with its vision to be Australia’s most sustainable region – vibrant, green, diverse
“The decision to embrace sustainability initiatives across the workplace makes good business sense. It sees a win for the environment and a win for Council’s bottom line.”
Council’s good outcomes are based on a strong framework which includes sustainability related policies, strategies and plans such as:

  • Climate Change and Peak Oil Strategy
  • Corporate Carbon Neutral Plan
  • Biodiversity Strategy
  • Sustainable Transport Strategy
  • Waste Minimisation Strategy
  • Affordable Living Strategy
  • Energy Transition Plan

Council also has a 120-strong Sustainability Champion network across the business and supports staff with formal training such as the in-house Diploma of Sustainability delivered by the Sunshine Coast TAFE.
