The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) is assisting the Department of Natural Resources at a controlled burn on Havana Road East, Coolum Beach.
The controlled burn was ignited just before 8am this morning and reportedly flared up around 11.45am. There is no immediate threat to property however the fire is creating a smoke hazard along the David Low Way between Coolum and Peregian Beach.
Coolum State High School has been evacuated due to heavy traffic congestion and smoke haze. This fire is currently moving slowly in a north-easterly direction.
Motorists are urged to avoid the immediate area and drive to conditions. Residents should endeavour to keep their doors and windows shut and if they suffer from or are susceptible to respiratory illness should keep their medication close by.
