Last Saturday, 6th February, Woombye played against teams from Nerang as part of their build-up to this year’s soccer season commencing in late March. In stifling heat the U17’s kicked off proceedings against Nerang’s Youth Div team with Nerang running out close winners 2 – 1. Woombye had by far the better of most of the game but were unable to capitalize on many goal-scoring opportunities. However, it was an outstanding effort considering the 35 degree heat and oppressive humidity.
The 2nd Div continue to show improved form week by week and ran out comfortable winners 5 – 0. They made the most of their opportunities and played good, attacking soccer with their defence rarely threatened.
After two easy wins in their previous games, the 1st Div suffered their first loss, going down to the strong Nerang side 2 – 0. Nerang were ahead 1 – 0 at half time and in the second half Woombye came out attacking in an attempt to level the scores. They created numerous opportunities but unfortunately the final touch let them down. Nerang clinched the game with a late goal. Despite the loss, it was a great effort by the team who were missing a few regulars through injury.
It was great to see a good crowd out supporting the teams and we congratulate both clubs for the good spirit displayed throughout the games. Thank you to the Nerang teams and supporters for traveling up to Woombye.
