AGL Action Resuce Helicoper helps Yacht in trouble

Published Apr 2, 2009

At approximately 12.30pm today the AGL Action Rescue Helicopter was tasked by the Australian Search and Rescue in Canberra to assist in a search for a yacht that had earlier activated its emergency beacon.

The vessel was located by the AGL Action Rescue Helicopter at approximately 1.30pm ten nautical miles North East of Noosa.

Poor visibility and heavy rain made it extremely difficult to find the vessel. It was only located after the crew fired a flare.

When radio communication was established with the crew of the yacht, it was determined that the vessel had rolled and snapped its mast.

The skipper had been thrown overboard due to the rough seas and was winched from the vessel into the Helicopter where he was flown to Maroochydore.

At Maroochydore he was met by ambulance and transported to Nambour Hospital for medical treatment.

Two people are still on board the yacht. It is hoped that as soon as the weather conditions improved the AGL Action Rescue Helicopter will attempt to go back for the other two crewmen.
