Festive season greetings
I would like to take this opportunity to thank residents of Division 5 for their continued support, friendship and goodwill over the past year. I have worked hard to ensure our region’s voice is heard and to achieve the best possible outcomes for our community. I’m looking forward to a bigger and better 2010, and encourage you to keep me informed of any issues or concerns you may have by emailing jenny.mckay@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or calling 5447 8372. I wish all residents a happy and safe festive season.
Free holiday buses
Take advantage of the free holiday buses on selected routes across the region from Boxing Day until January 3. All buses from Route 600 from Caloundra to Mooloolaba and on to Maroochydore will be free. Pick up a timetable at a council customer service centre, library or Visitor Information Centre or visit www.translink.com.au for more details.
Christmas Carols
Excitement is building amongst Coast families as the countdown to Christmas begins. Council will host two Carols by Candlelight events this year at Cotton Tree Park in Maroochydore on Saturday 19 December and Kings Beach amphitheatre at Caloundra on Sunday 20 December. It’s a fun and entertaining event for all ages – make sure you take the family along to enjoy the festive season spirit at one of these free events.
New speed limit for Cobbs Rd, Woombye
A new 60km/hr speed zone is now in effect on Cobbs Road in Woombye. A speed review for the road was tabled at the Speed Management Committee meeting in November following concerns from residents that the lack of signage was causing confusion over speed limits. Signage has now been installed and I encourage residents to stick to the new speed limit and exercise caution, especially over the upcoming festive season.
Palmwoods Skate park to have face lift
The skate park next to the Palmwoods swimming pool will receive an upgrade, with new concrete bollards being constructed to ensure the safety of the users is protected by preventing vehicles being backed into the skate bowl from the carpark. New trees will be planted to provide more shade, and a table and chairs built for use by skate park users and their families. I am pleased to fund these works from my Capital Works budget and hope the community benefits from the upgrade. I would also like to remind skate park users to use the brand new rubbish bin in the park to ensure it is a clean space for all to enjoy. I would also like to thank the community members and the users of the park that participated in the design for the upgrade.
Extension on Blackall Range panel
I was pleased to be informed that the Minister has extended my appointment on the Blackall Range Panel Reference Group, together with all other current members until December 2010. I look forward to continuing to work with the panel over the coming year to ensure the beauty, natural environment and character of the Blackall Range is preserved.
Maleny Precinct master plan work about to start
Work on the Maleny Community Precinct will begin in early January with the appointment of consultants Gamble McKinnon Green to the project. They will work with the Maleny Community Precinct working group and council to build on work conducted to date, with a draft master plan due in mid April 2010. This is a significant step forward for the project and I’m looking forward to strong progress being made into the New Year.
Herd of Cows move into Maleny
I was pleased to attend the official unveiling of the new Herd of Cows public art installation beside the main approach into town. Artist Janna Pameijer described the grazing silver and gold cows as representing the gentle bovine herds that graze the countryside and the dairy industry, which makes a significant contribution to the economic, social and historic fabric of the town. I congratulate all those involved in this wonderful project and hope residents and tourists enjoy the new art piece.
Nambour to Maleny electricity network upgrade
ENERGEX is planning to rebuild an ageing electricity line between Zealey Road, Nambour and Bunya Road, Maleny. The electricity line and associated property easements were established in the 1950s. Contact ENERGEX on 3407 4842 for more information.
Shared pathway, Mooloolah Connection Road
Council has approved the acquisition of land needed to proceed with the construction of a 2.5 metre shared pathway along Mooloolah Connection Road in Glenview. This is a much-needed pathway that will increase pedestrian safety and improve the usability of the road.
School visit
I recently visited the 6/7 class at Landsborough primary school with a council officer at the invitation of the students. We discussed a range of topics including safety around the school, especially in regards to the roadway that separates the school with its playing fields. The council officer has since returned to visit the class and give feedback to students on some of their questions. I was very impressed with the questions put forth by the students of their concerns and their willingness to put forward solutions.
