Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson has called for water tank rebates to be reinstated as the Sunshine Coast faces water restrictions from December 1 under the Bligh Government.
“They should scrap the $500 million dud extension of the northern connector and put money back into water tanks and other conservation measures,” Ms Simpson said. “But no more water fraud from this Government. It’s a disgrace that Deputy Premier Paul Lucas is making his promise to add $30 million two-way pumps on the northern interconnector dependent extending it another 50 km and spending another $500 million on extending it.
“They should add the pumps to the existing northern connector as that’s the one which is threatening the Coast’s biggest supply and bring back the rebates. Minister Lucas is a fraud.
“To make this ‘pump” promise contingent on stage 2 of the pipeline shows how shonky this government is.
“Where is the business case for this? Like Traveston, I can bet you it is either moth eaten or nonexistent. I expect he’ll blow a lot of hot air about how necessary this extension is but one thing I can guarantee – he won’t show the business case and examine it to independent scrutiny.
“It’s time to bring back water tank rebates – particularly as the Coast wasn’t on restrictions when the Government finished them and the government never focussed on bringing this assistance to the Coast.”
