Rudd's time bomb in your roof

Federal Member for Fairfax, Alex Somlyay has today backed a call from the Qld Council of Unions to hold an immediate safety audit and review of the Federal Government’s Home Insulation Scheme following the third tragic death in Queensland last week.

“Like me, the union is worried that there may be a time bomb in your roof.”

“Back in August last year I called on the Rudd Government to immediately halt this program before lives were lost. Unfortunately Minister Garrett ignored this call.

“I warned that the situation was serious. Unfortunately six months later, four people have lost their lives across Australia.

“While I welcomed the boosting of safety standards with regard to risk assessments in November last year – Minister Garrett hasn’t done enough.

“I am concerned that there are households that have a time bomb in their roof and Minister Garrett just isn’t taking the matter seriously.

“I believe that the program should be immediately suspended and the Federal Government should pay for Council inspectors to review the work being done by these roof installers.”

Mr Somlyay said that his office continues to receive calls from householders concerned by the pushy techniques employed by some of these firms.

“Unfortunately there are too many dodgy companies willing to put the lives of the installers and the householders at risk for the quick and easy Rudd Government Subsidy.

“This has gone beyond a Rudd Government publicity stunt; action must be taken now to ensure more lives are not lost.” Mr Somlyay said.
