Kin Kin Cruisers, Tewantin the Power & Eumundi Baby Boomers Take Mixed Titles
The NDTA Mixed autumn season finally ended with some great battles. In Division 1, the semi-finals saw Pomona Green Shots handily account for the Coolum Wipeouts 41:29, while the Coolum Pirates and the Kin Kin Cruisers fought it out toe to toe in their semi. The Cruisers finally prevailed with a 32:30 victory. In the final, played at the Noosa Tennis Club, the Green Shots got a great start with Craig Coles and Karen Walls taking the first set 6:2, and Alan Page with Allison Cherry winning the second set in a tie break. The Cruisers fought back and won the men’s set 6:1 only to have the Pomona ladies grab their set by a 6:1 victory. The teams went into the reverse mixed with the Green Shots leading by 5 games. The reverse mixed sets split, but Tony Hayward and Robyn Benaud paired beautifully for a 6:0 win, which was enough to give the Cruisers a 2 game lead and a “come from behind” title.
Tewantin The Power and the Cooroy Devils were the Division 2 finalists. Both teams were evenly matched and three of the six regular sets were settled by tie breaks, resulting in a 29:29 draw. The rules provide then for the number one pairs to play a tie break to determine a winner. The Power prevailed 7:5 to capture the flag. In Division 3, Eumundi Baby Boomers stormed through their semi-final to knock out the Tryers 44:10. They then went on to take out the Untouchables 40:26 for the title.
The spring season will get under way mid-August, so skis can replace racquets for a few weeks, teams can reflect on rebuilding and not worrying if rain will prevent a night of competition.
