Slipper fuming at Government’s post box back flip

Member for Fisher Peter Slipper is fuming that an approval from the Prime Minister’s office for post boxes to be relocated to Beerwah Marketplace appears to have been scrapped.

Mr Slipper says he was shocked to receive a letter from Australia Post dated 18 January, advising that it instead proposed relocating post boxes from Beerwah Parade to the corner of Steve Irwin Way and Roys Road – even further from the Beerwah CBD.

“This is a bizarre and disappointing development in this issue. I spoke personally to the Prime Minister and his office on this matter a number of times and was assured in March last year that the post boxes would be moved to Beerwah Marketplace – that is the most logical new location,” Mr Slipper said.

“Then to receive a letter proposing something entirely different, was a shock – it totally goes against the advice I had been given by the Prime Minister’s office. I regard this as a broken promise, a back flip.”

“The proposed new location on Steve Irwin Way is totally inconvenient and I cannot for the life of me understand why Australia Post would even contemplate such a move.”

The Beerwah Marketplace location was supported in early 2009 in a community petition signed by hundreds of local residents.

“I am asking that local residents contact my office to give me feedback about the latest suggestion, so I can collate a detailed response for the Prime Minister and the Minister for Communications,” Mr Slipper said.
